Anything that you are going to have to explain to people how to pronounce. My exhusband picke our son's name, Malachy, pronounced mal-a-, well I don't know how to write the last part, but it rhymes with guy. I didn't think it was a big deal, it's biblical, Irish American author Frank McCourt's brother was named that (why my ex picked it). But now everyone acts like it is the hardest name to figure out.

I cant stand People who like to name their kids weird names but most of all I hate when they try to spell it different. How is that making it different the name still sounds the same. I know a girl who spelled her kids names Maddisyn for Madison, but this ones the killer Maiysn for Mason like does that even sound out as Mason. These are going to go thru a life time of having to correct spelling of their names constantly.

I really hate how people keep adding to names to make them sound fancier. Like Christiana, Liliana, Juliana...as if adding "ana" to something makes it some fabulous name. I hate creative spellings, too. So tacky!! Ugh! And I have to disagree with the Sean thing - Sean is spelled SEAN!!!

You know, the way names are being spelled nowadays is no different to how it was many years ago. Back in the day, my name was a last name. It was "wierd", "strange" "awkward"- and now it is normal. Absolutely, totally normal.
The baby names that bother me the most are the ones that are just totally off the wall -- who in their right mind would actually name their child Apple? Really -- I mean REALLY?

There was an hour long program on E! television the other day and it was all about all the crazy names that celebrities are naming their kids. Some of the names were just awful! If you want your kids to get picked on in school, go ahead and name them some weird, bizzare name. The poor kid will end up in therapy. Some of the names on the show were:
Inspector Pilot
Hopper Jack
Audio Science
To name a few. I know that Inspector Pilot is the son of the star of My Name Is Earl. Hopper Jack belongs to Sean Penn and Audio Science is some singer from Europe or something. Anyway, are those awful or what? Good Lord!

Yes, misspellings annoy the crap out of me. I've never met anyone who has an unusually spelled name who liked it. They are always begging people to name their children something that people can spell, because their whole lives they have to correct people or their name comes up misspelled on an airplane ticket and then you can't get through security and so forth.
I, personally, hate historically male names for girls. Examples are Sidney, Ashley, Leslie, Ryan, Randy, Dale, etc. I also hate using last names as names, such as Tanner, Preston, Riley. I don't mind if those are family names and if they are used for boys, but I hate when they are used for girls and when they aren't even names in your family... or even worse, not even relevant to your ethnic background. The worst one of all is Madison. I think it is such a masculine name, I think of James Madison the president. I also think of Madison, WI, and Madison Ave. I think the worst part about it, is that it's in the top 10 of most popular names for girls and people still name their child that thinking it's unusual.
Then... I hate the Jaylen, Kaylen, Aiden... names. Every kid of this coming generation is going to have these names. Can't people come up with something else. It makes me think of in the '80s how every girl's name ended in a "y" or "ie" (yes like my name). At least there was a little more variety in those names (Tiffany, Cindy, Amy, Jessie, Missie, Valerie etc.) than in the Hayden, Caden, Peyton, Jayden... names.
And... just when you thought my rant about names was over, I thought of another one of my pet peeves. I can't stand it when people name outside of their ethnicity, unless there's a very good reason for it. I don't think people that are not of some kind of Irish descent should name their children Ryan or Sinead, Seamus or Flannery. Similarly, I don't think people of English/Irish descent should name their children African, or middle eastern, or whatever names... I just think it would be strange to see an Abdul O'Conner and similarly strange to see a Seamus Kwan. It's just when you read someone's name on paper, it conveys something about them, and I think a name should be reflective of oneself.

I hate, conner, greyson, jackson, graham, joshua, and well, any name that sounds like the owner of it is a little dickheaded kid with a bowl cut wearing annoying primary colors and banging trucks together. 45 year old parents who are clueless are typically the proprietors of said dickheaded kids.

I accept that some people want to be different with their choice of name, but the vast majority of children with very unusual names hate it and could get bullied about it. I think that parents need to consider how their child would think about the name because it's highly unlikely that they'll thank them for it! I think a lot of parents think that having an unusual name for their child is a statement about them, but i personally think it's not a good statement! Imagine when these kids grow up. What adult would enjoy the name Sugar or Shilow.
"So who do i make the cheque out to?"
"Shilow Smith"
"Oh, i'm sorry, we don't serve dogs."
It's an embarassment, and would be really annoying, especially having to spell it out constantly. I mean, even a name like 'Rachael' causes problems when people forget to add the extra 'a', and it's a pretty standard name.
Yeah, by all means choose a pretty name, or something unusual but generally known. But don't sling a load of letters together, totally make a name up or steal a country or object name. Toy?! That's appalling, and you can guarentee that he or she (you can't tell with a name like that) will get bullied at some point in their life. And I think that a lot of the time when place names are used it sounds a bit idiotic. Like Tenessee or Chelsea. You kind of want to as them what they are going to call their next child. Finland? Russian Federation? Bulgaria?
End rant.
I sound old and grumpy.
I'm only 15.
I just feel particularly strongly about this. =p

Or diminutive names like Gigi. Or trendy names like that one Nevaeh (heaven spelled backwards).

Yeah almost everyone's naming their baby mispelt or ugly names in an atempt to be original & cool. I Like some rare names like Naida,Tiffany,Dustin & Eden but not names like Ayeslenne,Laqueisha or Raindrop....what they dont realise is that in 12 years thier child will be just one in millons of baby's who have ugly mispelt futuristic names!

Any name that the parents give a child so that it's hip and edgy and ends up half the kids in their class have it. How silly to have Chantel A., Chantel T., and Eva, Ava, Avuh and Evie.
The wacky spellings have to go!!!

Miscommon spellings for common names, and these weird names parents try to come up with for "uniqueness," and also people going by their middle names instead of their first name.
In fact, if it were up to me, agencies like the DMV and Social Security office would have standardized spellings for certain names. So in other words, we'd either have Antwan or Antoine, assuming the "standard" was Antwan then no matter how you spelled your name for the purposes of that governmental agency only Antwan would be accepted, no matter how you actually spelled your name otherwise.
I think they already do that with regards to accepting first name and middle name both, so if your name is "John Bob Smith" but you like to be called Bob, tough luck--they're going to enter it as John Bob Smith, and you (I think) have to sign it that way. I agree with that 100%.
In things like this, I think SUPPRESSION of individuality is a GOOD thing, because the standardization makes it so much easier on society having to deal with paperwork and processing things etc. Why burden society just because you want to be "unique?" In this case I think "unique" just equates to being cocky and arrogant enough to want to be an unnecessary pain in someone's backside.
Save your uniqueness for your own ventures, I mean heck, even Magic Johnson has to sign his papers Earvin Johnson I'm sure, although the entire basketball world knows him as Magic Johnson. That is how it SHOULD be.
I would even so go far as removing all titles like Dr, Reverend, Honorable, Professor, Lieutenant, etc, at least (again) for these agencies. Why isn't Mr and Ms good enough?

i agree with everyone! the fake, misspelled, made up hideous attempts to be unique will be a handicap to a young person applying for a job,or college or hoping to be promoted.don't give your kids ghetto-awful trailer park names!!! there are too many good decent names to choose from and you owe it to your child or children to give them the very best start in life possible, their name is very important it is the core and center of who they are and who they will become!!!! many people take better care in naming their cats or dogs, your children are more important! good luck!
