What Are Things You Absolutely Must Avoid While Breastfeeding?
06/27
I know the obvious (like alcohol, smoking), but what are some other things that should be avoided while breastfeeding? Are there any foods, drinks, or medicines I should be using caution around or avoiding entirely? Thanks!

I avoid most dairy and onions cabbage, cauliflower, brocoli garlic can all give your baby colic and gas . I had 3 weeks of hell scream scream scream and tried everything then i looked to my diet and changed it I cut out all the above foods and he has been great since. you can slowly start to introduce things back into your diet and see if they upset your baby , its all trial and error.
Actually, there isn’t a whole lot that must be avoided. Even alcohol in moderation is fine. The following link is from La Leche League and it discusses medications and breastfeeding…http://www.llli.org/FAQ/medications.html
Here is a list of frequently asked questions on the La Leche League website…http://www.llli.org/FAQ/FAQSubject.html
I also like Dr. Hale’s forum on breastfeeding and medications. You can find his responses to questions on almost every type of medication….http://neonatal.ama.ttuhsc.edu/cgi-bin/d…
Honestly, breastfeeding mothers are really not that restricted when it comes to diet and medications.
If you have a question about a specific food or drug, google Dr Jack Newman and email him. He’s awesome, because he looks at how a drug is metabolised—and it’s half-life and all that stuff. Drug companies just say “Ask a Doctor” or put drugs on the avoid list because they won’t do research or even if they know it ‘should’ be harmless, they don’t want any liability. Very few things actually get ‘into’ the breastmilk.
Although, some babies are very sensitive to milk proteins, or soy proteins, or wheat. But not many
You pretty much have to eat and drink the same things as you did when you were pregnant, since everything that goes into you is still getting to your baby through the milk.
I don’t smoke anymore but I read if you DO smoke, smoke a cigarette at least 90 minutes before breastfeeding again to make sure nothing will get to the baby. And I think drinking in moderation is alright?

there are pretty much the same risks in breastfeeding as pregnancy, you can eat the ham though (yay) but anti biotics, cough and cold medicines should all be ran past a doctor first.
There are medications (like anti-psychotics) that you cannot take; but generally most foods are OK. All things in moderation.
