Parents Who Have Experience With Children In Private School?
I enrolled my 14 1/2 year old niece into private school for the 9th grade. (I have 4 week old twins and my 3 year old niece) So I don’t have much experience with putting older children through grade school. Is there anything I should know before hand about private school? How was the experience for your children? Did you notice signifigant academic improvment in comparison to their level in public school?

I had my children in public school and then switched to private. I found private school to be an excellent choice for my kids. There were less disruptive kids in private school and I found that the parents at private school were more involved. You can get bad teachers in private school just like at public school. The difference is that you can talk to the administration and they actually care that you are not happy. It’s a great choice if you can afford it for that many children. Good luck.
I have never had children of my own, but I attended private school from second grade on up, then I home schooled a brother, sister, and two cousins for a few years. Finally, I began as a teacher’s aide at the same private school I had attended. I’ve worked at two other schools since then so I feel I might have a little insight.
Just be sure to stay involved. Some private schools are nothing more than babysitters. Most, however, are able to give more individualized attention. At our school we basically tailor the curriculum to each student. No two kids are on the same exact level, but it works! I guess that is my biggest peeve with public school – the cookie cutter ideology.
As to academic level, yes, they will go farther, faster because they get the specific help they need. Often there is only one or two issues which the student has missed which keep causing problems as they grow. This leads to frustration and “I can’t do it.” In a smaller classroom with less distractions and one on one instruction most private teachers can pick out the weak places and the student just blooms!
